Strangely enough today, walking to the studio I peeped a little yard sale in front of the YMCA with tons of records. Digging through the stacks I found a white label with some marker writing "X-Men". I was cool, but no mula I kept on walking. Five hours later, I find out that Roc Raida one of the illest turntablist ever, part of the X-Men, X-Ecutioners died this weekend. Unbelievable! Soft spoken, humble with one of the craziest methods of dropping science on the decks.

Rashied Ali passed away at 76 in NYC this past wednesday. One of the illest drummers ever! My favorite Coltrane record Interstellar Space is John and Ali.

Word, yes word is bond. For a while there I was wondering if the record would ever be put out but I couldn't imagine a better and more interesting label to carry on this ship of songs. Guillermo Scott Herren went through many places to put out a labor of love but couldn't find the right parents for it until Stones Throw came to redeem the situation. Zing!

Savath y Savalas' "La Llama" will hopefully come out and by hopefully I mean by the end of this year. That joint should definitely make the top 5 for me. You can stream the record here.

In a few days, 3 to be exact Drag City records is putting these guys plus some others (Suarasama)

in this little box:

I got the title track from this compilation

and it sold me within seconds...

The story goes like this (ripped from here):

"On August 19, Drag City will reintroduce the sound of Suarasama to the world. Fajar Di Atas Awan was first released by Radio France Internationale (RFI) in 1998, and the title track appeared on a Smithsonian Folkways compilation in 2000. This release is the first U.S. issue of the entire album and its first-ever release on LP anywhere.

Suarasama is a group of many members, mostly ethnomusicological musicians. Founded in 1995 by Irwansyah Harahap and Rithaony Hutajulu, they are based in Medan City, North Sumatra, Indonesia. Suarasama plays contemporary music, exploring conceptually or instrumentally the sounds of African, Middle Eastern, Indian, Sufi Pakistan, Eastern European and Southeast Asian and particularly Sumatran traditions. Arranging this diversity of sounds and instrumentation, Suarasama come up with more than the sum of their parts; music that mitigates the absurd generalization in the name "world music" with an organic approach.

This organic quality is deeply compelling; the quiet beauty and simple intensity of Fajar Di Atas Awan express the album's title ("Dawn Over the Clouds") with a clarity that belies the complexity of the group's compositional methods. Faith is a theme of the lyrics, which even when not translated or understood, convey their essences with a meditative, prayerful approach, often using multi-part harmonies that indicate at (and create in the listener) higher ecstasies.

Following a century of multi-cultural consolidation resulting in countries comprised of a multitude of different tribes, a group like Suarasama is inevitable; rather than isolating their Sumatran identity within the larger mosaic of Indonesia, they explore the meeting points of their music with the sounds of neighbor cultures, finding a harmony in the confusion. They're not the first – we're reminded of Sandy Bull, John Fahey, the Radha Krisna Temple, the collaborations of Ravi Shankar and Andre Previn, even our own Ghost and Six Organs of Admittance.

The world grows closer and smaller, but no less wonderful and exciting; the sound of its people and the impulses within them still an exotic treasure. As walls come down and our neighbors come closer, Suarasama seeks to bring us the song inside us all."

If you know the name Machinefabriek (Rutger Zuydervelt) you know dude doesn't stop making records. One of the most prolific cats out there making whatever he wants, and it shows.

In a recent interview with Wire, Zuydervelt says:

"Basically, I release everything that I make. Things that I'm not happy with just don't make it to the finish line - they're thrown away. And the speed of releasing has everything to do with my own extremely restless state of mind. I always want something to workpn, but Ialso always want to finish the things I'm working on to make room for the new ones. So there's just no end to this process - it reflects the way I think. Also, I have the feeling that everything is part of a greater whole. A release is not just "a release", but a step in the ongoing exploration of my limitations and interests in music and sound-making."

Boomkat has said of his latest effort Dauw to be "quite possibly one of the finest albums of the year - and a career best from Machinefabriek".

Being that Machinefabriek has put so many things since 2004, I'm not up to speed with all of his releases nonetheless from what I've known this has been my favorite. Assertions from his label say Dauw sounds like Arvo Part, Fennesz, Mogwai, and Philip Jeck. Though I agree with the comparisons I'd add Alva Noto, Taylor Deupree and Sakamoto with sparse clouds of field recordings. Gorgeous record!!!

Besides this there has been an avalanche of the so called Flying Lotus sound swarming round my being lately. His latest record plus a slew of dudes such a Samiyam, Hudson Mohawke, Lone and my current favorite Lukid. His Onandon joint is pure ace and has been burning every musical impurity lately.

São Paulo and its gray toothbrush vs. the urban horizon

If you come to the samba or have at some point in time you might recall this article on São Paulo's attempt to anihilate all sorts of what the powers at be have deemed visual pollution. Recently an article on the Folha de São Paulo (New York Times a la São Paulo) writes this (translated by yours truly):

Up until August, their work will be in view at the Tate Modern in London. The brothers Gustavo and Otávio Pandolfo who form the duo osgemeos, and Francisco Rodrigues (Nunca) installed the same type of graffiti based work there as they have in the open space of São Paulo -- which can barely be seen anymore in the city.
The trio found out that one of their most important murals in the capital of São Paulo (680 meters long) done in collaboration with 3 other artists (Nina Pandolfo, Otávio's wife, Vitché and Herbert Baglione) was painted over with gray paint.

By means of its assessorship of the press, city council admitted the mistake committed by the company that was contracted to wipe out the tagging from public areas. The cover up was to be done in the nearby area of the mural but the workers ended up extending the clean up and thus going over it. In contact with city council, "who noticed the mistake" and interrupted the covering up, leaving the mural intact in the West/East side of the avenue.

"It's disrespectful. We paint a castle in Scotland, New York's city council hires us to do a mural there. We are respected and known worldwide. But here in our own home, we're not", said Otávio. City council now asks that the artists contact to inform them of other graffiti authorized places.

The mural was finished in 2002, after 3 months of work --with then mayor Marta Suplicy's authorization, through youth coordinator Alexandre Youssef.

"There was total support from city hall. The municipal logo was even painted on the mural, erased because of the following gesture. It is pitiful", affirmed Youssef.

Retalliation

Osgemeos say that many of their works have disappeared from the urban landscape. "Three huge mural were erased. Two smaller, I don't even know", tells Otávio. The other artist Nunca tells of a 100 or 150 works covered up.

"I'm indignant and I'm telling you that there will be retalliation. They just didn't erase a mural, they erased part of the art history of São Paulo . City council needs to apologize publicly", says Nunca.

Nina Pandolfo concludes: "At what level is art a plague to be combatted with a Lei Cidade Limpa (Clean City Law)? Art dirties the city?". For Nina "São Paulo already lacks a horizon, there are only buildings. And they are all gray, yellow or white. When we put color on the walls, we open a horizon".

the nagakin capsule tower... Tokyo, Japan

Sadly the tower is to be demolished, over the concern of asbestos at an unknown date.

This building which was the first capsule architecture design (a capsulelike room within a mega structure) popular in the Metabolist movement of architecture in the 60's and 70's, is located in the Ginza area of Tokyo.

The tower is a 14 story- high consisting of 140 capsules stacked upon each other at different angles around a central point. Kurokawa designed the units to be detachable and replaceable.

Tom Vanderbilt who wrote a story on it for Dwell Magazine, poignantly says of its demolition:

"Not only do we lose a sense of how the past imagined the future,

we lose a future that never came to be known"

The building was originally made as a hotel in order to provide affordable housing for Tokyo's businessmen working late during the week.

I finally and unfortunately finished Murakami's The Wind Up Bird Chronicle. I did not want this book to end by any means. What a read. Dang. Props goes to Rob Matthews and Ben Volta for this one. Muchas gracias muchachos.

While I was 3 chapters away from the end I requested Lynne to pick up his Kafka on the shore for me. Everyone and everything had told me that The Wind Up Bird Chronicle stands as Murakami's best, so in purchasing Kafka I felt disappointed to go into a read that would not be as great, but in the first 6 chapters of Kafka I'm already enthralled.

Providence has treated us well and its heat hasn't been gruesome at all. People everywhere, Tealuxe is in the house, family and friends. Stoked to start the program.

When Lynne and I were first married we went to see "Amelie" at a little art house nearby us. Unbeknownst to Lynne and I my blood sugar had gone down tremendously making my experience at the theatre a bit surreal. To add more surrealism to our experience the theatre workers were all little kids who would stand on top of crates to serve popcorn, work at the cashier and illuminate the path of moviegoers down the aisle with the flashlight. A vivid "City of Lost Children" moment. I got out of the theatre ecstatic "...Lynne we have to make a film right now... right now!!!!" My blood sugar came back up minutes later and a bit of the surreal.
Because my dinner friday night wasn't a hefty one I thought my blood sugar would play tricks on me and give me another dosage of the surreal. But no, blood sugar fine, no kids working tickets and no mysterious photo man. This time the surreal was outside of me. St. Mary's Church is the spot to go to see and listen to Christopher Willits and Stars of the Lid. I was in awe and the only things that kept me from floating away were my allergies and the fact that I thought I would lose my prime spot. Willits played as if composing to the ocean in requiems, odes, elegies and prose with a guitar, pedals and some M-audio. Stars of the Lid played as if the world had already ended and they were left here with eternity. Their 3 female accompaniments were tremendous! That cello had me dreaming of New Jerusalem. So on point! Apparently David Rose (XPN guy) is hosting 7 more shows this year with music from the "ambient, electronic and spacemusic worlds". Check that here.

Yesterday I had the massive honor of being able to see a friend that I haven't seen in 2 thousand minutes. Busyness is my current middle name. Doing stuff that I haven't done in a long time has kept me underneath the rocks for a minute. I'd like to post a few new drawings soon and pics of the fam. But so far amid financial aid applications and whatnottery, here's this:

On the aural corner besides some Flying Lotus, Brasil has almost taken over completely. Lot of old stuff. Here are the prime in favorite order:

Caetano Veloso "Jóia"

This record is pure heat and it's rapidly becoming one of my faves from the man. This gem came out in 1975, interestingly enough when I was born. Maybe the nakedness is a homage to my birth. Anyway if you like Caetano you'll dig this joint. Experimentally minimal and minimally experimental. Brasil with a plucking guitar, an occasional percussion and claps. It's almost as if Caetano's playing all the instruments by himself simultaneously, carefully, slowly and with sparse breaks between each note.

Sergio Mendes & Brasil '77 "Primal Roots"

Sergio Mendes has crept up in my collection mainly through vinyls. I have about 7 or 8 records by dude and only one is a CD. I've mostly bought (thrift store/record store clearances) the vinyls because I'm usually partially (very partially) interested in his stuff. A song here and another there. But when I saw this one, read the songs and the liner notes I couldn't believe it was in a dusty crate next to Ray Coniff and Barbara Streisand joints. Both sides are fire and are not here preoccupied in interpreting The Beatles. Old folk songs from the root land the way the samba likes. Don't get me wrong I likes me some Beatles but not usually from Sergio.

This cover is downright some illness and the music within way better. Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso and Maria Bethania (Caetano's sister) not singing together, just a compilation of songs. Side A compiles Gil and Caetano and Side B is Bethania singing Noel Rosa's songs. Quiet (Bethania), festive (Gil) and introspective (Veloso). Among many, many others this is one of those joints that I wish the world understood Portuguese.

A lot of songs here are pretty known Caetano things such as Terra, Sampa and Eu sei que vou te amar (João Gilberto). Veloso's steez through and through. Just goodness. And I absolutely love this cover. Of course that's Caetano's mom. Muito is of course accompanied by the group A Outra Banda da Terra (The Other Band of the Earth) which brings some electric guitars and casios here and there (insert dated late 70's/early 80 touch), but the records holds up in goods.

The other day a student of mine whom I pick up every morning in my route asked me why I've been so early (he means "on time") everyday this week. I said "Homes, it's spring". True, other goodies are happening around me to make me get excited about waking up, nonetheless spring births the desire for awake action within. On that, I love finding or being reminded of music that jives with my present state of mind, and this is where the lotus enters, the flying one at that.

Since 2 nights ago I can't seem to get off dude. Sure he's blessed with Coltrane blood, (Alice's great-nephew) and he carries it a la hip hop vein schematics. I've had ish from dude from whiles back, nonetheless today and yester has been lotus day and noche. A mixed baggage from the get go but tonight's been "July Heat" . If you sink ears into Madlib, J Dilla, 9th Wonder and like to relax underneath tamarisk shade, dude is for you!

On point! I have friends from "any" sides of this "american" political sphere and most of them disagree with me. I'm posting this (if possible) unpolitically, meaning not thinking about the political campaign, candidacy, other issues, democrat, republican, libertarian, green, socialist... Though I realize the context of Obama's candidacy in the present time I post this for his beyond timely words as a person and not necessarily as a candidate. Again incredible show! I must say last year's show was even better, mainly because last night's set was akin to the 2007 show and the latter contextually was a huge surprise for me, because they mostly played from previous efforts rather than from 07's Andorra. Johnny Brenda's definetely a good joint to see shows, although I'm never taking my bag anymore, I felt like I was carrying a flat pleather baby around. The F*** Buttons opened for them (and like Rob pointed out no sense in typing the f word here either). Big drone sound going droning, droning... drone. It was as if 2 dudes looped 2 samples from Animal Collective and pushed it with some effects. It got interesting 'round the 4th song played and then outta nowhere a techno beat arose and their set ended. To appreciate them live I think checking them out via a record first must be a must. Lynne dug them which made the experience very interesting for me.

This was my 3rd time seeing Caribou live and these cats have REALLY matured as a band putting out sounds made from one person. Tight to the marrow! Everybody was heat and on point and I think Dan stepped up to the drums even more this time. Pure illness. And Luke, the music being played prior to the set was a lot of Sun Ra if I recall, if not Ra maybe Rahsaan Roland Kirk which is another dude who I think you'd be stoked to get acclamated with.

Language is fascinating.

Dialects , colloquialisms, slang and the likes are interesting things to me. How a language can become another language by the placing of individuals into certain contexts and how those individuals learn to converse in a new and made up way, fabricated by themselves in known and unbeknownst ways. Lately I've noticed some peculiarities in the vocab sprouting from some teenagers. One infused with computer/music terminology. For those of you who visit the samba but don't know, I teach art at an alternative high school for at risk youth and while teaching I get all kinds of verbiage completely inventive and replete with a colloquialism that extends itself beyond neighborhoods. While the students were drawing a still life in class, one came up to me for some proportional help. I looked at the still life and started to draw a little bit on his drawing to show where he'd gone off leaving his lines intact. To this he asked me:

Yo Roob, can you delete those lines yo?

After school while driving students home, a girl annoyed by some weird scent in the van asked me:

Roob, can you pause so she can open the window, yo?

"delete" as in erase
"pause" as in stop the van

I can understand delete mainly because I think they encounter that word more often than erase, but the pause one left me in wonderment. I had to think about it for a bit. This week is the week prior to spring break and we just fininshed a big project so I didn't want to start another huge one to be interrupted by a whole week off and have the kids come back weak on it, so I decided to do a small project on graffiti. We spent 2 days watching the documentary "Style Wars":

The documentary is from 1982 I believe and it talks about the pioneers of the hip hop culture specifying on graffiti. The language in it is brilliant. But what I noticed in the film is something I think about all of the time within hip hop. The conglomeration of all the things from the culture and society of the 70's and 80's in the American urban landscape, namely here The Bronx. Cartoons, mass media, sexuality, poverty, video games, oppression, sports, violence, postmodernism and all things future: robots, computers, space... became part of the language, the dress code, the graffiti artform, breakdance and rap music. The interesting thing about the slang of Style Wars is when I juxtapose it to today's youth vocab. Back then one could see the beginning of something mixing, brewing as it were and today we catch its adulthood, if you will. However language doesn't seem to be able to be compared to age metaphorically. Sometimes its adulthood seems to be when it was younger and it is simply always becoming and modifying itself.

Massive music day! Listening to Onra's "Chinoiseries" which sports 32 tracks much

like Madlib's "Beat Konducta in India", although in my opinion better, way better!!!

Onra who resides in Paris went back to the land of his grands, Viet Nam and ...

"After hours spent riding on a motorbike in Saigon streets, a taxi finally helped me find some old Asian records. I was feeling like an explorer discovering a forgotten treasure. I bought almost 30 vinyls, most of them in poor condition, went back to the crib, and started making beats with some material that I wasn't used to."

The project was started out in August 2006, when Onra came back to France from Viet Nam. As a vinyl junky, he says "...really couldn't come back to France without bringing back some wax."

First time I heard on dude was on a compilation called Beat Dimensions Vol.1 on a track called "Cosmic Traveling" done with a cat named Byron.
Akin to Madlib's in India, Onra's "Chinoiseries" tracks are short, however a bit longer and make a tad more sense than the former's. Nicer ideas me thinks. While Boomkat has it for 10 pounds, Itunes is routing this joint at $3.99. Cop it before they recognize its goodness.

I wanted to start this blog as a place of conversation between anyone willing and desiring to speak on certain topics that I could commence. So my very first post was a conversation dealing with hip hop as a postmodern construct. The subject matter had been on my mind for quite a while as I was working on a workshop that I eventually presented for the staff at the school that I teach at. This morning while driving to work and listening to Opiate's "Sometimes ep", I kept thinking about how "hip hop" this ep actually is.
A lot of the music that I am sometimes attracted to is the kind that has somewhat of a resemblance to hip hop but is not usually considered "hip hop". In my mind they operate as the hip hop of 20 or 30 years from now. I use the genre and terminology for the sake of this conversation, although as some of my comrades agree with me that the idea of genre altogether should disappear, I'll stick to the diction for its purposes here.

When I got to work and had sometime to peruse some blogospheric comrades, I found that my man Luke had posted back in January a very interesting conversation dealing with hip hop. Luke who is "not a fan of hip hop" but "sometimes hear(s) things that (he) like(s) submerged below the surface of something that (he) (doesn't) like" expressed how "there are artists beneath the surface of hip hop, creating music that might be perceived as hip hop by many, but is actually something entirely different". While I have another friend who hates "hip hop" but actually loves things that are completely informed by it, unbeknownst to him.

While Luke speaks of certain hip hop as being something entirely different, I see some of those things as actually being the actual essence of hip hop or those that carry within its spirit of forward thinking and creativity. Surely definitions of genre would be quite beneficial in this juncture but I have no desire to write on a footnote, so I'll leave it at this. Hip hop is a culture, not just a music form, however the conversation seemingly is solely about the music, so onto the music . I would go on to speak that the current, radio blasting, money mongering, women deprecating lyrics and lame production of beats is not what hip hop in its musical form is. Thus this is its first problem. The music of the spirit of hip hop deals with larger elements that the current culture seem a bit ignorant of. In the latest issue of Filter magazine, Q-Tip from the untouchable "A Tribe Called Quest" when asked why hasn't there been a hip hop group that's achieved what Tribe did, says:

"Because people have become more interested in the byproducts of success than success itself. The interesting thing about success is that it's subjective and it has a certain path it travels. And the thing that makes success sweet is that when you take whatever path to it, generally you'll come across some kind of adversity. With that adversity, you'll learn to appreciate that path and there's some sort of growth. And that's the success; all the rest is byproducts of success. I think the people today who are doing music, especially hip hop, are more concerned with the end result and not the success... they want money. They want to acquire things. They want to have the "look", as they say, and they'll stop at nothing to get it..."

Causing the process of making music or for this matter recreating it become stiffled and stale.
Music made using other existing music by the fragmentary usage of samples with a highly conscious notion of the powers that be and those that oppress, spoken in a lover AND a fighter cadence, party music about war which in and of itself takes a contradictory tone, a contradiction in which hip hop was able to make relevant, highly creative and futuristic music that in turn has helped develop tons of other "genres". But since we want to get past the point of "genres", this form of music, hip hop, has helped music recreate itself in areas that do not necessarily regard itself as being placed in that specific category. Sorry for the verbiage, I could edit but then I'd lose my train of thought.

Personally then tracks like Opiate's "Stp!", Autechre's "Ccec", Squarepusher's "50 Cycles", Caribou's "Pelican Narrows", Boards of Canada's "Julie and Candy", Caural's "Nonart", Jan Jelinek's "Moiré (piano & organ)", Kim Hiorthøy's "Forskjellige Gode Ting", Mokira's "Qualität Im Quadrat", To Rococo Rot's "Untitled 04" (Kolner Brett), Mira Calix's "Picture 4 You" plus people like Landau, Pole, even Oval seem to resonate more with hip hop than the likes of today's radio's one hit wonders. To me these here mentioned not only carry the spirit of creativity that hip hop as well as other forms of music have that have pushed the medium futureforward but these as well possess a certain rhythmic structure found in hip hop music. A misfitted boom bap, bitcrushed snares and a barrage of samples conjointed to create other samples. Fragments made of fragments.

Their new record is called "Quaristice" out now on bleep. 20 tracks = $9.99.

Lowdown:

If you like Autechre it's worth the gets, however no real surprises here but nonetheless a nice effort from these two scientists. Some atmospheric tracks here and there and small 2 minutes beats that leave you wanting more. As categories go Autechre has always been put in that IDM file (the good old Intelligent Dance Music genre). For a minute there Autechre had put the dance out of the IDM which was good with me. Don't get me wrong, when the dancefloor opens I'm the first one in, but making good and interesting danceable music isn't something easy. This time Autechre brought the D back though, but not entirely. The opening song makes you wonder if Autechre is going to get soulful in Brian Enoness, but the 2nd and 3rd track end that notion quite rapidly. Personally the record gets interesting after the 4th track, gets really good around the 7th with Simmm, on that Autechreable steez with tankakern, rale (really nice slow moving track a la Draft 7.30) and Theswere. A nice robotic boom bap titled WNSN tips their hat to all of their old hip hop influences. They disperse the D here and there with tracks like Fwze and 90101 - 5H 9 (the latter being fantastic), get down with robots and simulated video games via steels and fol3 and close the record with two atmospheric delights, Notwo and outh9x. Oh and bnc cast is dope too. Get it but don't expect revolution. No Ep7, Confield or Draft 7.30 . peace...
